Elaine Katherine Bugg (née Mehmel) passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, in Vernon, BC at the age of 87.
Born on August 9, 1938, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Elaine was the daughter of Fredrick and Katherine Mehmel. Throughout her life, she built meaningful connections and lasting friendships wherever she lived and left an impression on those who knew her. She was known for her warmth, joyful spirit and her deep love of living fully.
Elaine will be lovingly remembered by her husband Tom Bugg; her children Tom (Lilly) Mehmel, Kim (Tim) Robb, and Shawn (Wendy) Le Breton; her grandchildren, Dirk, Kayley, Matthew, Rebecca (Brendan), and Christian; her sister Pat (Tim) Craig; brother Terry Mehmel and by Tom's son Scott (Brenda) Bugg and their family. She will also be deeply missed by her extended family and the many friends whose lives she touched over the years.
Affectionately known as Nanalaine by her grandchildren, Elaine was the very embodiment of sunshine. She loved bright days, fresh air and being active in the world around her. The summer was especially dear to her, as she could swim in Okanagan Lake every single day. She was drawn to the water and the freedom it gave her, finding joy and renewal in its rhythm.
Music was another constant and cherished part of Elaine's life. She loved singing along when a good song came on and shared her love of music freely with others. She was devoted to her Lutheran Christian faith where she participated in the choir and formed deep, meaningful friendships within the church communities wherever she lived.
Elaine was social by nature and happiest when surrounded by people. She loved conversation, laughter and shared experiences. She brought a sense of warmth and ease to any gathering. She lived fully, with curiosity and openness and never lost her appreciation for the experiences that made life rich.
Though Elaine lived in many places throughout her life, Winnipeg always held the most special place in her heart. To her, Winnipeg was the truest definition of "home” and was a place she carried with her no matter where she was.
Elaine was deeply loved by her family and friends, and she knew it. Her life was one of connection, joy, and resilience. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth that will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Humphreys and the compassionate teams at the Vernon Cancer Clinic and the North Okanagan Hospice Society.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the North Okanagan Hospice Society in memory of Elaine Bugg.
A Celebration of Life will be held later in the spring. Details to follow.
